Anastasia Powell uses a cane to navigate to her work station at the Winston-Salem Industries for the Blind in Winston-Salem, N.C., Friday, Feb. 10, 2012. The NIB (National Industries for the Blind), the largest employer in the country for blind people (a community that has a 70% unemployment and SustainU, a small, start-up company in North Caroline that manufactures clothing made from 100% recycled products. When SustainU was looking to ramp up production of its apparel, it wanted to keep production in the state, rather than outsource it, and so it hired a team of workers from the NIB agency. In just three months, the blind workers produced 24,000 T-shirts for SustainU. (Chris Keane for The New York Times
